Khadijah, her mother and her grandmother together run a humble but moderately busy Zanzibari restaurant in the nooks and crannies of Dar es Salaam. Grandmother things of Khadijah as "visionary". Mother would rather think of her as "flighty" (sometimes referring to her daughter as "28 years old, but a *young* 28"). Neither would be wrong, and Khadijah probably understood that best of all. She was never particularly on time, she never really slaved over the hot stove on a busy Friday night, she never found herself up to her elbows in greasy suds and soapy murk. But her brain was constantly running at double-speed, and no one could tell her she didn't work hard. Her priorities were just... different. Khadijah was always experimenting with the next new thing, typically finding ways to "revamp and refresh" the restaurant, regardless of being asked. She was simply an artist in that way, and the restaurant was her unwitting canvas.

Unfortunately, not everyone cares for expressionism.
